Info

The Pomona College Museum of Art is an active partner and catalyst across the liberal arts curriculum. The new facility must accommodate direct engagement with works of art, curricular use of collections and exhibitions, social and academic programs, adequate storage and ease of access for a growing permanent collection of 11,000+ objects. It must provide for the presentation of a vibrant contemporary art program, and changing exhibitions drawn from loans and permanent collections.

The architecture of the new Pomona College Museum of Art is the result of three primary ambitions: 1) To respond to the character of the context, both of Pomona College campus and the City of Claremont, 2)To provide a facility that can be effectively used for a variety of functional requirements, 3) To provide a world-class teaching museum that should serve as a model for its peers.

The vision of this teaching museum is to provide a wide variety of museum conditions in a relatively small facility. Teaching extends from the instruction on the significance and qualities of artifacts from the collection, to the open display of mechanical systems required for long term storage, to the direct access to those permanent staff who run the museum. The students see not only the collections but what it takes to direct and curate in a world-class institution.
