Biography

Derek Johnson was born in Seattle, Washington. In 1997, he graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and garnered the Award for Excellence in Design. He received his Master in Architecture with Distinction from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 2003. Working with the firm of SMBW architects, Mr. Johnson was a designer on several projects in the Virginia area, including a residential commission that received a Virginia State AIA Award for Excellence.

While pursuing his graduate degree, Mr. Johnson initially joined Machado and Silvetti Associates in 2001 and worked on the J. Paul Getty Museum of Antiquities in Malibu, California. Upon graduating, he returned to the firm in 2003 as a project manager on the Hassayampa Academic Village housing complex at Arizona State University. He was responsible for the coordination of the exterior systems and detailing for the 580,000 square foot complex that includes nearly 2,000 student beds, academic programs and a dining facility, and managed the project's construction administration efforts for the office. Currently Mr. Johnson is project manager for the Dartmouth College Visual Arts Center. He was appointed an Associate of the firm in 2005 and became a LEED accredited professional in 2006.

In addition to his work experience, Mr. Johnson has been a lecturer in Architecture at Northeastern University and has also been a guest critic at several architectural schools, including the University of Virginia and the Boston Architectural Center.
