Markus ElKatsha was born in Los Angeles, California and grew up in Cairo, Egypt. He attended Roger Williams University where he received his Bachelor of Architecture in 1995. In 2000 received two degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology: a Master in Urban Planning and a Master in History, Theory and Criticism. After completing his undergraduate degree, he practiced in Egypt for Rami Dahan and Soheir Farid Associates on the project team of two desert developments: the el Gouna master plan that included commercial, residential, and entertainment facilities, and the el Qusair master plan for a seaside community. While at MIT, he worked for the Boston Design Collaborative, where he participated in the competition-winning master plan proposal for the American University in Cairo.
Mr. ElKatsha joined Machado and Silvetti Associates in 2001 and was named an Associate in 2005. He has worked on several projects, including the Getty Villa in Malibu, California, on both the museum renovation and the new North Campus conservation center. Mr. ElKatsha served as job captain for the Rockefeller Stone Barns adaptive reuse project and green house in Pocantico Hills, New York, where he was involved in the design and execution of the project. More recently he has played a similar role for the Suliman S. Olayan School of Business at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon.
In addition to his professional work, Mr. ElKatsha has served as a guest critic for studios at Northeastern University, the Boston Architectural Center, Roger Williams University, and MIT. He continues to write for the American Research Center and serves on an advisory committee for the Preservation of Historic Cairo.
