Edwin Goodell was born in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in Lexington. In 1992, he graduated from Colby College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in economics and fine arts with a concentration in printmaking. During his time at Gary Wolf Architects, Mr. Goodell worked on several Boston area projects, including the transformation of the historic Hill Kennard House into the new home of the Brookline Music School. While at the New York office of Skidmore Owings and Merrill, he contributed to the roof design of the JFK International Terminal. His model building skills and interest in CNC fabrication led him into the SOM shop, where he designed and built laser cut models and mock-ups for a variety of SOM design teams. He graduated with a Master in Architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 1998.
After Harvard, Mr. Goodell worked as a lead designer in the office of Murphy Burnham and Buttrick Architects in New York City. In addition to residential projects in Manhattan and on Fishers Island, New York, he oversaw the design and production of office spaces for a transportation design firm in Newark, New Jersey, and was involved in the renovation and expansion of the Convent of the Sacred Heart School in New York City’s Upper East Side.
Mr. Goodell joined Machado and Silvetti Associates in 2001 and was named an Associate in 2006. He served as a senior designer for the One Western Avenue Graduate Student Housing complex at Harvard University and was responsible for the coordination of the MEP systems throughout the 250,000 square foot LEED-certified building. He served as project architect for the award-winning renovation and expansion of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, a century-old building originally designed by McKim Mead and White and was the project architect for the Olayan School of Business at the American University of Beirut, in Lebanon. Currently, Mr. Goodell is project director and architect of record for the new Visual Arts Center at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, and project manager for the Westown mixed-use development in Cairo, Egypt.
In addition to his work experience, Mr. Goodell has lectured on the work of the office with a focus on innovative wall assemblies and sustainability issues at numerous conferences and symposia across the country, and has been a guest critic at local architectural schools, including the Rhode Island School of Design, Northeastern University, Wentworth University and the Boston Architectural Center.
