Denver Art Museum
The Denver Art Museum, renowned for its iconic architecture and cultural significance, has undergone a remarkable transformation under the visionary design team of Machado Silvetti. This extensive renovation and expansion project not only revitalized the museum’s physical presence but also enhanced its role as a vibrant community space. The design pays homage to Gio Ponti’s visionary "Skyscraper for Art," a concept rooted in creating a dynamic, accessible, and inspiring environment for art and community. Celebrated by critics and awarded multiple accolades, Machado Silvetti’s designs exemplify innovation, sensitivity, and forward-thinking architecture.
Masterful Architectural Intervention
The project involves multiple interventions throughout the existing structure, culminating in a harmonious blend of old and new. At the core of this transformation is the captivating Sie Welcome Center addition, which boldly steps into the architectural dialogue with the museum's iconic buildings by Gio Ponti and Daniel Libeskind. The Boston Society for Architecture described this ensemble as "the showstopper," emphasizing how the Sie Welcome Center "successfully finds its own voice and presence among the iconic buildings." This statement holds up the design’s ability to respect the historic fabric while celebrating contemporary architectural expression.
The project’s scope is a "dramatic transformation," according to critics, creating accessible, inviting, and aesthetically striking spaces for Denver's local community and visitors from around the globe. The design’s thoughtful interventions facilitate a seamless experience, connecting the museum's past with its future through innovative spatial language and materiality.

Since the unveiling of Machado Silvetti’s renovation, the Denver Art Museum has garnered a series of prestigious awards, affirming our designs contribution to contemporary architecture. The project received the Boston Society for Architecture Honor Award for Design Excellence, a testament to its innovative approach and excellence in design. Prior to this, it was honored with the Denver Mayor’s Design Award, recognizing its positive impact on the city’s urban fabric and cultural landscape.
Additionally, the project was distinguished by Interior Design Magazine’s 2022 Best of Year Award for Museums—an accolade that highlights the project’s interior ingenuity, spatial effectiveness, and aesthetic sensibility.

Highlighting Critical Acclaim
The accolades from eminent juries and institutions echo the project’s architectural strength and community relevance. The Boston Society for Architecture jury stated, “The DAM project consists of multiple interventions throughout the existing building. The showstopper, the Sie Welcome Center addition, successfully finds its own voice and presence among the iconic buildings by Gio Ponti and Libeskind... Overall, the project is a dramatic transformation that results in beautiful and inviting spaces for the community for generations to come.”
Similarly, the AIA Colorado Awards Jury praised the contextual and urban integration of the project: “Primary gestures of the Sie visitors center and new plaza successfully resolve a complex urban condition. The Ponti building rehabilitation and roof terrace successfully enable the Museum to engage a large spectrum of the community... The elegantly detailed pavilion manages a lightness and distinct character.”
Vision for the Future and Enduring Legacy
Machado Silvetti’s renovation and expansion for the Martin Building have not only transformed the Denver Art Museum into a more accessible, dynamic, and visually compelling cultural hub but have also set a benchmark for longevity and lasting relevance. Domus Magazine proclaimed that, following the renovation, the Denver Art Museum has become one of the 50 must-visit museums in North America, emphasizing the enduring impact of the project on the cultural landscape. This recognition underscores how thoughtful architecture can enhance a public institution’s timeless appeal and ensure its relevance for generations.
The Martin building at the Denver Art Museum exemplifies how truly creative design can build a durable cultural legacy—one that builds on architectural significance and continues to model the integration of design with art, and community.
