The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has awarded Machado Silvetti multiple national design awards for Downtown Cary Park.  A collaboration between Machado Silvetti, OJB Landscape Architecture, and the Town of Cary, North Carolina, Downtown Cary Park is a transformative integration of architecture, landscape design, and urban planning. The AIA recognizes the cross-disciplinary excellence of the park’s design by honoring the design team with the AIA Regional and Urban Design Award, and the AIA Small Project Award for the Bark Bar Pavilion.

“[This award] is a reminder of the importance of community support and collective effort”

The aim of Downtown Cary Park was to integrate landscape and architecture to create a cohesive, contemporary civic destination in the heart of Cary. “These two awards from American Institute of Architects are a national recognition of the design achievements of Downtown Cary Park,” said Jeffry Burchard, Managing Partner and Principal at Machado Silvetti. “It is a reminder of the importance of community support and collective effort in the pursuit of beautiful and innovative public spaces.” Downtown Cary Park design was selected for the awards from nearly a thousand applications. It is one of only TKTKTK parks recognized by the AIA 2026 juries, and the only park to receive multiple awards.

One notable achievement of the park is the design team’s unified approach, in which architecture and landscape function to produce a cohesive visitor experience of wonder, delight, and rest. Cody Klein, Partner at OJB Landscape Architecture said: “TKTK TKTK TKTK TK TK TK TKTK TKTKTKTKTK” about receiving one of TK# of the AIAs Urban and Regional Design awards. Through the careful implementation of a series of pavilions, in relationship with the landscape, the park transitions from an urban plaza to natural spaces, creating diverse spatial and ecological conditions across the site. “The Bark Bar is emblematic of the aspirations of the park. It is dynamic, refined, and a testament to the power of architecture to enhance everyday experience, regardless of scale,” said S. Austin Ward, Senior Associate at Machado Silvetti of the Bark Bar’s acknowledgment as one of TK#  AIA Small Project award recipients.

An equally important testament to this recognition from the design community is the park’s measurable social impact. With more than 750,000 visitors in its first year and over 1,000 events hosted, Downtown Cary Park has become a vibrant hub for recreation, culture, and community connection, demonstrating the power of design to shape public life and strengthen a growing community.

“This recognition reflects the vision and care that went into creating a park that truly belongs to the community,” said Joy Ennis, Downtown Cary Park General Manager. “Downtown Cary Park was designed to bring people together and seeing how residents and visitors have embraced the space makes this honor especially meaningful.” Residents and visitors are encouraged to experience the award-winning Downtown Cary Park and discover how thoughtful design, community vision, and public investment are shaping the future of Cary.
