Citadel Square

Description

This public plaza is prominently located in Beirut’s central business district, adjacent to the city’s oldest archeological site. With findings that are over 6,000 years old, the site marks the location of the ancient Berytus, the Iron Age origin of modern-day Beirut. It still houses visible ruins, including portions of a medieval castle and an Ottoman barrack. The design solution includes a  master plan for the general area, as well as a design for the plaza and preservation walls

The design monumentalizes the promontory to celebrate it as Beirut’s point of origin. This approach unfolds through several interventions: water features that recall the ancient harbor and medieval moat, strategic excavation to reveal ruins such as the Ottoman barrack floor, a landscaped "secret garden" where the promontory once stood, and temporary but substantial retaining walls that offer views overlooking the city and archeological park.
