Sustainability

We believe that architects have a fundamental responsibility to imagine and implement a better future through sustainable design. In collaboration with our consultants, we have incorporated recycled and locally sourced materials, innovative wall and roof assemblies, sustainable materials, high performance mechanical systems, green roofs, herb gardens, landscape features and natural ventilation strategies that reduce energy consumption while improving human comfort.

With this approach, and among our success stories, Machado Silvetti designed the very first LEED accredited art museum in the United States, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) completed in 2005. Since this we’ve gone on to design a large number of highly sustainable and efficient buildings, many of which received LEED or comparable certifications. Most recently, we designed the new Benton Museum of Art to have one of the lowest EUI (Energy Use Intensity) ratings of any museum in California and it was certified as LEED BD+C NC v3 Gold.

"As an early adopter of LEED, we recognized the importance of designing buildings that promote environmental sustainability and healthy living and have since been committed to pushing the boundaries of sustainable design.”

- Jorge Silvetti
